Bhatsa Dam at Kandivli has whirlpools.

3 youth drown trying to save girls

Three younsters from Vikhroli,who had gone fora picnic with a group of friends to Bhatsa dam, Kandivli, died while trying to save three girls yesterday.

The trio - Pradip Jaiswal(23), Mehboob Sheikh(22) and Rakesh Mahadik(22) - had set out at around 7.30 am along with tehir friends to ahve some fun before college began.

However, things turned tragic after they spotted two of the girls were drowning in a whirlpool. Pradip dived in to help them. While he managed to get them out he was too tired to pull himself out, of the whirlpool, say Pradip's friends.

Mehboob, Pradip's friend dived in to rescue Pradip. But he too was sucked in by the whirlpool. Rakesh, then dived in to save his drowning friends, but he too couldn't resist the strong water surrents.

Fifteen minutes later, the group managed to pull th ethree out, who were then rushed to Padgha Civil Hospital, near Titwala. The trio were, however, declared daed before admission.

Pradip's father, Gamaprakash Jaisawal, said, "It was only after we received a call from the hospital authorities that we came toknow about our son being involved in a serious accident."

Shaukat khan, a relative of Mehboob Sheikh, expressed his concern at the increasing numbers of youngsters dying at the spot.

"The hospital authorities told us that in the past one month, youngsters drowning at the Bhatsa dam. People should be prohibited from using this place as a picnic spot," said Khan.
